What are the disadvantages of melt transfer pumps?
The melt conveying pump (also known as a melt pump or melt booster gear pump) is widely used in the extrusion molding of plastics, resins, rubbers, chemical fibers, and other products, especially excelling in situations requiring the reaction, conveyance, and pressurization of polymer melts with high output pressure, high temperature, and high viscosity. However, the melt conveying pump also has some drawbacks, as detailed below:
Material Requirements:
The application of the melt conveying pump is limited when processing plastics containing fillers or special modifiers. It has strict requirements on the dispersion of components, compatibility with plastics, and abrasiveness.
Materials containing large particles, abrasive fillers, or reinforcing agents cannot be processed using extruders equipped with melt conveying pumps, as the filler particles within can easily form plugs that cannot pass through the tooth clearance of the meshing gears of the melt pump. Plugging and abrasive wear of the teeth can quickly damage the melt pump.
Fine mineral fillers may also gradually form plugs capable of damaging the melt pump in the high-speed shear zone if they are not well-compatible with plastics and do not undergo sufficient shear.
Complex Structure and High Cost:
Compared to some simple conveying equipment, the structure of the melt conveying pump is relatively complex, leading to higher manufacturing costs.
In terms of installation, maintenance, and repairs, the melt conveying pump may require a higher level of technical expertise and more time and effort, thereby increasing maintenance costs.
The initial investment cost is also relatively high, requiring selection and configuration based on production needs.
Difficult Operation:
The melt conveying pump needs to be adjusted and controlled based on parameters such as viscosity, temperature, and flow rate, requiring operators to possess certain professional knowledge and skills.
In summary, although the melt conveying pump has many advantages, it also has some drawbacks. When selecting and using it, factors such as production needs, material characteristics, cost budget, and the technical proficiency of operators need to be comprehensively considered.
